In word processing, an orphan is the first line of a paragraph that appears as the last line of a page, or the last line of a paragraph that appears as the first line of a page (this is sometimes called a widow). Fix them by reworking the rag or editing the copy. This interrupts the reader’s eye and diminishes readability. Widows and Orphans A widow is considered poor typography because it leaves too much white space between paragraphs or at the bottom of a page. To cure widows, lines are moved from the bottom of one page to the top of the next.
Orphans are moved to the next page with the rest of the paragraph. When only the first line of the paragraph appears at the bottom of the first page, that line is called an orphan. What are widows and orphans and how do you fix them?
